At the end of the latest trading session, Robusta coffee prices on the London market for September 2023 delivery increased by 72 USD/ton to reach 2,604 USD/ton, while for November 2023 delivery, prices increased by 45 USD/ton to reach 2,438 USD/ton.
On the New York market, Arabica coffee prices for September 2023 delivery decreased by 0.8 cents/lb to 155.5 cents/lb, and for December 2023 delivery, prices decreased by 0.6 cents/lb to 155.85 cents/lb.
The two coffee markets continue to show opposite trends, with Robusta prices increasing strongly while Arabica prices decrease. The USD appreciated, hindering the recovery of the London market.
On the morning of July 20th, the US Dollar Index (DXY), measuring the fluctuations of the greenback against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), increased slightly by 0.34% to reach 100.29.
The USD rebounded in the recent trading session after the UK's inflation cooled more than expected in June, causing the British pound to decline significantly against other major currencies.
Meanwhile, Robusta is strongly supported by the information that the inventory remains low. Experts believe that although Arabica supply is abundant, upcoming coffee roasters will have to adjust their blending formulas to include a higher proportion of Robusta due to market conditions and the continuously improving quality of Conilon coffee beans. The London market continues to maintain its inverted price structure.
According to international traders, Robusta coffee prices will likely remain stable shortly due to the drastic decline in Indonesia's coffee production and Vietnam entering the final stage of the harvest. However, the upcoming late-year harvest season is not expected to suffer significant damage even with the appearance of El Nino weather phenomena in the Pacific coffee belt.
