Processed coffee, mainly roasted and ground, and instant coffee for export is growing strongly in volume and value while raw material prices are at record levels and raw material exports are decreasing in volume.

According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), Vietnam's processed coffee exports in the 2022-2023 crop year reached 89,941 tons, with a turnover of 511 million USD. This output accounts for 5.4% of total export volume (not converted to green coffee) but the value accounts for 12.5%. The average export price in this crop year is 5,676 USD/ton.

In the 2023-2024 crop year, export output will increase sharply by 42%, to 127,543 tons, accounting for 8.8% of total export volume, while value will contribute nearly 18%, thanks to the average export price increasing to 7,616 USD/ton.

In November 2024 alone, businesses exported 10,004 tons of processed coffee, with a turnover of more than 100 million USD. Although output accounted for only 16.5%, export value accounted for 26.8% thanks to the export unit price reaching 10,025 USD/ton, the highest level ever.

These figures show the impressive growth of the Vietnamese processed coffee industry. At the same time, they reflect the great potential of the industry to improve its position in the international market.

According to records, recently, many Vietnamese coffee enterprises announced to participate in exporting processed coffee such as Miss Ede brand (Ede Farm Trading Service Company Limited, Dak Lak) announced to export the first container of finished roasted coffee to the US on December 1.

Also in December, Vietnam Coffee Corporation announced the export of the first batch of deeply processed coffee products under the Vietnam Coffee brand to China. The export items include: roasted coffee beans, ground coffee and instant coffee with many different flavors. This coffee company expects to increase the proportion of deeply processed products in total export revenue.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Luan, General Director of Global Trade Link Company Limited (Meet More brand), commented that instant coffee is growing strongly, reaching 30% thanks to its convenience, diverse flavors and prices suitable for the majority of consumers. Currently, Meet More offers many unique types of instant coffee such as sea salt coffee, banana coffee, mango, strawberry and taro, which are popular with international customers.

However, for roasted coffee, competition becomes more difficult because Vietnamese coffee tastes are quite different from the world. According to Mr. Luan, only when promoting deep processing and linking products with corporate brands, Vietnamese coffee can be truly recognized in the international market. Previously, Vietnam mainly exported raw coffee, so foreign consumers enjoyed Vietnamese coffee but did not know the origin of the product.
