Vietnam's Star Anise from Jan to Aug 2023: Surge in Exports

Star Anise

As of August 2023, Vietnam has experienced remarkable growth in the export of Star Anise, a valuable and aromatic spice. Statistics reveal that in the first eight months of the year, Vietnam exported over 9,996 metric tons of star anises, with a total export value of $57.6 million USD. This represents a substantial increase of 24.0% compared to the same period the previous year.

Vietnam's primary export destinations for star anises are India, China, and the United States, comprising 57.2%, 14.5%, and 6.4% of the total export share, respectively. Notably, exports to India increased by 45.8%, while those to the United States saw a 13.5% growth. In contrast, exports to China decreased by 13.0%.

One particularly noteworthy achievement occurred in the first quarter of 2023, when Vietnam exported 3,369 metric tons of star anises, generating a total export value of $21.6 million USD. This marked an astonishing growth rate of 261.9% compared to the same period in the previous year.

Vietnamese Star Anises are currently in high demand in various regions, including South Asia (such as India and Bangladesh), the Middle East (UAE and Pakistan), East Asia (Japan, Taiwan - China, South Korea), the United States, and European Union member countries.

This surge in demand can be attributed to the increasing need for raw materials in various industries, including food production, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and more. Additionally, numerous free trade agreements have opened up opportunities for Vietnamese star anise products, creating a favorable environment for expansion and development.

Vietnam Star Anise

According to the World Spice Association, Vietnam boasts an impressive position in the global spice market, with two of its prized spices, Star Anises and cinnamon, ranking among the world's top producers. Specifically, Vietnam ranks second globally in star anise production and third in cinnamon production. These spices are highly sought after in international markets, contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to Vietnam's annual revenue.

As reported by Marketsandmarkets.com, with these abundant spice resources, Vietnam is poised to become a significant player in the global spice and flavorings market, which was valued at $21.3 billion USD in 2021 and is projected to reach $27.4 billion USD by 2026.

In conclusion, Vietnam's impressive growth in Star Anise exports in 2023 showcases the country's potential in the global spice market. With increasing demand and favorable trade agreements, Vietnam is on a path to becoming a key player in the international spice and flavorings industry, further boosting its economy and reputation as a top spice producer worldwide.
